Health insurance for salons, barbershops and spas

How salons, barbershops and spas with 1 to 50 staff handles health insurance in 2027: who can be covered, which structure fits the payroll, the Form 8941.

Licensed Agents in 31 States · NPN #22052447

Typical shape: owner plus 2-12 stylists, many of them booth renters on a 1099.

Booth renters are self-employed and cannot be put on the shop’s plan; only employed stylists and front desk can. With a small W-2 count a QSEHRA is often the simplest offer, and stylist pay is usually under the 8941 wage limit if a group plan is chosen instead.

Start with your ZIP and your headcount, not with a plan name

A group quote, an ICHRA costing and the owner’s own plan all start from the same census: who is on payroll, their ages and home counties. Enter your ZIP and a licensed agent runs all four routes for your business, free.

Takes about 30 seconds. No account, and you choose how you are reached.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”

Who the plan can reach

Group plans, ICHRAs and QSEHRAs cover W-2 employees who meet the hours rule; owners follow their entity’s rules and 1099 contractors are outside every structure (why). Part-timers under the hours threshold are usually outside a group plan but can be a class under an ICHRA (part-time and seasonal staff).

Pay and the small-employer credit

BLS national medians for the roles on this kind of payroll (May 2024, employees): hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists $31,480 (under half the Form 8941 wage limit); barbers $36,400 (inside the phase-out band); skincare specialists $40,700 (inside the phase-out band); manicurists and pedicurists $34,810 (inside the phase-out band); massage therapists $54,510 (inside the phase-out band). Owners and their family members are left out of the average. The Form 8941 credit pays up to 50% of the employer’s premium share for two years when a business has fewer than 25 full-time equivalents and average wages under $67,000 (2025 figure; full credit at or under $33,500 and 10 FTEs), through a SHOP plan. The table shows the approximate rate for any headcount and wage.

What an allowance buys where your staff live

An ICHRA or QSEHRA allowance is spent on the individual market in each employee’s county. For 2027 the median Silver premium for a 40-year-old runs from $604 in Iowa to $1,254 in West Virginia across the 24 states on this site, and in 11 of them no marketplace plan is a PPO (Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah), which matters for staff who travel for the business. State by state.

The owner’s own coverage

Separate from the team’s: a sole proprietor or disregarded LLC deducts premiums above the line up to net profit; an S-corp owner runs the premium through Box 1 of the W-2; partners take it as guaranteed payments; none of them can take an HRA reimbursement tax-free. How to get a real comparison

  1. List the W-2 team: ages, home ZIPs, hours, rough pay.
  2. Put a ZIP in the box above; a licensed agent prices a group plan, an ICHRA and a QSEHRA for that list, runs the Form 8941 arithmetic, and prices the owner’s own plan separately.
  3. Check the hospital your staff use against each network on Plans By City.
